Thurrock Independents leader praises the quality of NHS staff and demands political leaders condemn plans to close Orsett Hospital

Thurrock Independents Leader, Cllr Luke Spillman said “I recently attended Basildon Hospital Day Surgery Unit to have minor surgery on my hand. Basildon Hospital has experienced many problems and I have entered complaints on behalf of many residents over the years. However, my experience during the day I spent at Basildon Hospital couldn’t have been any better. From reception, to the nurses, anaesthetist and surgeons, the level of patient care was more than exceptional, it was perfect. I’d like to commend the department and all the staff for the high standards that I witnessed during the day I spent there. I’ve spent a career challenging poor standards of customer services but think it is important to pass on positive feedback when I can.

“Whilst the surgery itself was at Basildon, pre-surgery and post-surgery appointments were at Orsett Hospital. I attended Orsett on three occasions. Again, the level of patient care was commendable. Staff were exceptional, and I was seen on time on all three occasions.

“As everyone knows, Orsett Hospital is at risk. NHS England have made no firm commitments that the services currently offered within Orsett will all be provided within one of the four proposed health hubs. The health hubs plans are barely past an embryonic stage and it will be years before a spade hits the ground to start construction. The initial consultation has confirmed that interests of Thurrock residents would be best served by not closing the hospital.

“In February 2018, the Thurrock Independents secured a motion at full council, which called for Thurrock Council to make the case for a new hospital in Thurrock, fit to meet the needs of our ever-growing population. We are the only party to commit to making the case for a new hospital.

“Given the above, the Thurrock Independents find it deeply worrying that the Council is not actively opposing the closure of Orsett Hospital. The Thurrock Independents will oppose and actively campaign against all plans to close Orsett Hospital until:

– NHS England builds a new hospital in Thurrock
– NHS England can provide cast iron assurances that not a single service currently provided within Orsett Hospital will not be removed from Thurrock

“We call on Thurrock Council, Stephen Metcalfe MP and Jackie Doyle-Price MP to publicly oppose all current plans to close Orsett Hospital. Not to do so would place the health and well-being of Thurrock residents at risk.”
